India built the first hydrogen ship

April 16th,  2025 — In a landmark development for India’s maritime and green energy sectors, the country unveiled its first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell-powered sea vessel, hailed as a transformative step in shipping and inland waterway transport. Vice President of CSIR and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, lauded the achievement, describing it as a “success story emanating from the joint effort of public and private sectors.” He emphasized the vessel’s launch as a symbol of India’s growing capabilities in clean technology and innovation.

“This marks a turning point in India’s journey towards sustainable transportation and environmental stewardship,” said Dr. Singh. “It is a proud moment showcasing our ability to develop and deploy indigenous green technologies.” The hydrogen fuel cell vessel, designed and built entirely in India, is powered by hydrogen—producing only water vapor as emission—offering a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered vessels. The project aligns with the government’s broader vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions and promoting Make in India initiatives in the clean energy sector.

The vessel is the result of a collaborative effort between key public sector institutions and private companies, demonstrating how synergy between government and industry can yield groundbreaking innovations. This initiative is expected to pave the way for wider adoption of hydrogen fuel technology in India’s maritime and transport sectors, setting an example for sustainable development and technological self-reliance.
