Waste plastic road innovation wins India, Asia record honours
The innovative technology converts difficult-to-manage plastic waste into durable infrastructure material through specially engineered geocells used in road construction. Developed as part of a sustainable infrastructure initiative, the project supports circular economy goals while addressing the growing challenge of plastic waste management.
The recognition ceremony was held at the CSIR-CRRI auditorium in New Delhi in the presence of senior officials from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). N. Kalaiselvi lauded the initiative as a major milestone in environmentally responsible road engineering.
According to CSIR-CRRI scientists, extensive testing and validation studies were conducted to ensure the geocell system met engineering standards related to durability, structural integrity, and field performance. The technology had earlier been demonstrated on a section of the DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway with support from the National Highways Authority of India.
Officials from BPCL highlighted that the initiative reflects growing industry-academia collaboration in developing scalable and sustainable infrastructure solutions aligned with India’s environmental and resource-efficiency goals.
