Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi became the Deputy Chief of Army Staff

Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi took charge as Deputy Chief of the Army Staff today (19 February 2024). On the occasion of assuming charge, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and was given a Guard of Honor at the South Block Lawn. Prior to taking over as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command from 2022-2024 in a highly challenging operational environment. An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984, a unit he later commanded. He has the unique distinction of having balanced exposure to both Northern and Western theatre.

During his illustrious career spanning 39 years, he has held command positions in challenging operational environments spread across the country. Have worked on appointments. He commanded his unit in the Kashmir Valley as well as in Rajasthan. He has been Sector Commander and Inspector General of Assam Rifles in an intense counter-terrorism environment in the North East. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has also commanded the Rising Star Corps with operational role on the western borders. Later, he commanded the prestigious Northern Army from 2022-24 in an extremely challenging operational environment on both the Northern and Western borders.

During his command, he provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for the planning and execution of sustained operations on the Northern and Western borders, besides conducting active counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. During this period, he was actively engaged in ongoing negotiations with China to resolve the disputed border issue. He was also involved in the modernization and equipping of the largest army command of the Indian Army, where he led the induction of indigenous military equipment as part of a self-reliant India. He worked closely with the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh for centrally-oriented nation-building outcomes and infrastructure development.

Apart from challenging command assignments, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has held important positions in Headquarters Armored Brigade, Mountain Division, Strike Corps and Integrated Headquarters (Army).
