Satish Kumar becomes Chairman and CEO of Railway Board

Shri Satish Kumar took over as Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Railway Board (Ministry of Railways) yesterday. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet recently approved the appointment of Shri Satish Kumar as Chairman & CEO, Railway Board. A distinguished officer of 1986 batch of Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), he has made significant contributions to Indian Railways during his illustrious career spanning over 34 years.

On 8th November 2022, he took over as General Manager, North Central Railway, Prayagraj, marking another milestone in his public service journey. His educational background is as impressive as his professional achievements. He holds a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur and further enhanced his knowledge with a Post Graduate Diploma in Operations Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

His career in Indian Railways began in March 1988 and since then, he has contributed in various key roles across various Zones and Divisions, bringing innovation, efficiency and safety improvements in the Railway system. His initial postings included Jhansi Division of the then Central Railway and Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) at Varanasi, where he honed his skills in the field of locomotive engineering and maintenance. Later he served in North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur and Patiala Locomotive Works and contributed to important projects that enhanced the operational efficiency of these Divisions.

A notable aspect of his career is his commitment to Total Quality Management (TQM). In 1996, he underwent special training in TQM under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This training played a vital role in shaping his approach to railway management, focusing on continuous improvement and adherence to the highest standards of quality. His application of TQM principles is clearly reflected in the various projects undertaken by him, leading to significant progress in operational safety and reliability of railways.

One of his significant contributions is his work related to the Fog Safe Device, an innovation that has proved to be vital in ensuring safe running of trains during fog. This device has become a vital tool for Indian Railways, significantly reducing the risks associated with low visibility during the winter months, especially in the northern regions of the country. His efforts to improve this technology have earned him recognition and appreciation from various quarters.
